Interrogating the assumption that America past or present is tolerant, progressive, or inclusive, Dr. Kelly Baker will use Klan artifacts to demonstrate how Christianity and nationalism bolstered racism in early twentieth-century America. As she will show, the 1920s Klan was a Protestant movement that couched its religious and racial hatred in Christian virtue and devotion and communicated its message through everyday material objects. Christianson is a 2018 of graduate Harvard College in Cambridge, Mass., and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in musicology at University of Durham in England. She began her organ studies at age 8 with Ursinus organist Alan Morrison, chair of the organ department at the Curtis Institute of Music. Handel’s oratorio has been a tradition at Ursinus since 1937. This year marks John French’s 40th year conducting these concerts. Tickets for the performances are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and must be purchased online in advance at ursinus.edu/tickets. Organist Alan Morrison performs the first Heefner organ recital of the spring semester. He will present a varied program featuring works by Jeanne Demessieux, Cesar Franck, Wayne Oquin, Florence Price, Harold Stover and Ursinus College’s student composer, Julian Schwartz. Morrison is one of North America’s premier concert organists and is the Haas Charitable Trust Chair in Organ Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
